Utopian Literature: A Selective Bibliography

Organized by century, this bibliography lists utopian literature published from 1516 to the present day. It has been reproduced from the companion volume to the exhibition.

 

Bibliography of Secondary Sources

Bibliographies, anthologies, conference proceedings, general studies, chronological studies, and thematic studies related to the themes of the exhibition and the web site. Although most of this bibliography appears in the companion volume to the exhibition, the resources relating to Metaworlds: Utopian Visions of the Internet and the Metaphysics of Virtual Life appear exclusively in this online version.

Companion Volume

An unprecedented history of utopia in Western culture, the beautifully illustrated Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World (Oxford University Press, 2000), edited by Roland Schaer, Gregory Claeys, and Lyman Tower Sargent, features twenty-two essays by world-renowned scholars on topics relating to the themes of the exhibition, as well as bibliographies and a filmography. The more than 300 images, in color and black and white, were selected from materials exhibited at The New York Public Library and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This publication is no longer in print.
