Bibliography
of Secondary Sources
Laurent
Portes; revised by Lyman Tower Sargent for the English edition of the
companion volume to the exhibition Utopia: The Search for the Ideal
Society in the Western World.
Given
the vastness of the topic, an exhaustive bibliography on the subject
of Utopia would be an immense undertaking. In the selective bibliography
that follows, preference has been given to works published during the
last thirty years, and to texts and collections of a general nature
rather than those that address specific works or individual writers.
Special issues of periodicals and conference publications devoted to
this topic are listed, but their contents are not enumerated separately;
therefore, this bibliography makes indirect reference to a great number
of other texts. In addition, we have not systematically listed here
all of the works cited in the footnotes and individual bibliographies
that accompany the essays in this volume.
Works
in the bibliography are listed under the following subject headings:
bibliographies and anthologies, conference proceedings, general studies,
chronological studies, and thematic studies; the latter two sections
are broken down further into subsections. Within each section and subsection,
the arrangement is alphabetical.
This
compilation has benefited greatly from the bibliography, covering Utopia
in all its forms, published since 1987 in Utopian Studies, under
the direction of Lyman Tower Sargent and the Society for Utopian Studies.
The Society's Internet site
provides, in addition to a bibliography of recent, primarily North American
publications, links to several other sites of bibliographical interest.
